reflect/refract (2021, revised 2023)
6’; 1.1.1.1.1 – 1.0.1.0 – pf – 1.0.1.1.1
For 12 musicians (flute, clarinet, oboe, alto sax, bassoon, horn in F, trombone, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass).
In reflect/refract I created a line of symmetry about a single pitch. A process unfolds by which movement above (reflection) and below (refraction) this surface gradually expands until the material has reached one octave above and below the line of symmetry. Throughout this process, the music bubbles and “particlizes” – I pictured a landscape in which sunlight is reflecting off of, and passing through, the surface of a body of water.
